Mission also referred to as “Frank Lloyd Wright”, “Craftsman” or “Prairie” is a style of stained glass that has geometrical design patterns. Unlike the traditional “Tiffany” style patterns that are single faceted designs, floral or patterns of the dragonfly on them. The mission style portrays the geometric designs. Some styles of the mission appearance will also contain Aztec design patterns.
The differences between the two are obvious but are still very appealing to the eye. While the debate continues about the true origin of the term “mission style lamp,” the style itself remains very distinctive and very popular to this day. However, legend has it that the Mission style concept originated around the year 1895 by Joseph McHugh, a New York furniture manufacturer. The Tiffany style concept was started by L.C. Tiffany in 1899, also of New York.
The colors seen on the Mission stained glass and Tiffany stained glass are pretty much the same and share the same blends. Mission style uses subtle colors it takes from the inspiration of the earth, specifically the desert. The colors of the mission style stained glass are usually gold, amber or brown. They do manufacture green, red, blue or rich orange as well.
Tiffany style colors share some of the same shades as the Mission style. Olive green color with red, blue and amber.
These colors are meant to fit into the surroundings of dark wood furniture and earthy tones. These lamps help to emphasize the natural materials like wood furniture and wood structures within your home or office. The Mission style concept has blended itself with the company called Arts & Crafts. And between the concept and the company, these lamps have become considered as an Accent of Appeal.
The Mission style lamps are handcrafted. Look for that specific description when purchasing one of these lamps. Their are some lamps out there that are “knock offs” and are manufactured by machine. However, this is a rarity even in this technologically advanced age. The stained glass lamps offer an heirloom of quality that deepens with age.
Mission and Arts & Crafts style furnishings and interiors are typically very durable and a classic accent of timeless appeal.
In 1974, Paul Sahlin came up with “His” version of a mission style concept lamp and a tiffany style concept lamp and merged the two together. Paul’s idea is what came to be called the “Tiffany Mission” style lamp, also called the Paul Sahlin Tiffany lamp. This variation was subtle, yet he did manage to create a lamp that was a blend of the two. Some of the mission lamps even to this day will contain the “tiffany mission” words within the lamps description. But a lot of Paul’s lamps still appear to be strictly geometrical in design like the original mission lamps. Or the single faceted patterns like the original Tiffany style.
As stated earlier, the two styles, mission and tiffany still remain to be very distinctive in their appearance and patterns.
